Top Three Vital Tips to Make Your Costa Rica Trip Safe and Hassle Free

Costa Rica

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of travelling abroad especially if your destination is Costa Rica. With its wondrous offerings, it’s understandable why people momentarily forget the other side of the coin. Avoid problems even before they arise while in another country.

Get acquainted with things that matter like currency and other money matters, travel documents, health and medication, local environment, and safety issues.

Currency, tipping, and other money issues

The Colon is Costa Rica’s official currency. Most banks will give you a fair exchange rate. If you find yourself short on Colon’s, don’t worry as most businesses accept U.S. Dollars. Tipping is expected but only in high-end restaurants and Malpais hotels. Expect to give a tip of $1 – $12 to tour guides. Tipping taxi drivers is not necessary but appreciated if there’s additional service rendered.

Visas, passports, and other documents

Passport of Costa Rica

To get a 30-90 day visa, you are obliged to show your passport upon entry. Also prepare to have your departure ticket in your name and dated before your visa expires with you. When travelling by bus, expect the border officials to collect your passport. It’s also fair to note that it can take hours for your passport to be returned to you and for the bus to cross the border.

Immunizations  and other health concerns

It’s advisable to get hepatitis A and B as well as typhoid vaccines on top of the routine vaccinations recommended when travelling to Costa Rica. Be aware that this country teems with wildlife and if you plan on getting in close proximity with them, rabies vaccination is recommended to be on the safe side.

Make sure you receive anti-malarial drugs though malaria isn’t a serious problem in Costa Rica, this is just for prevention. If you have health problems or other pre-existing medical conditions, have your doctor prepare a prescription for the medicines you need to bring. Note that some medicines may not be available there so ask your doctor for alternatives in case you run short of prescription medication.

Travel Scandal Involving Expedia,Booking.com and Inter Continental Hotels Chain

Top Online Travel sites and a hotel chain are involve in fixing hotel room prices at unsuspecting online customers.

A investigation that took almost two years was conducted by Britain’s Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has determine that Inter Continental Hotels Group(IHG), the owner of the Holiday Inn chain conspired with Booking.com and Expedia to stop the increase in discounts being given to online customers trying to book for a hotel in their site.  OFT thinks that this problem is also happening to other  major online booking travel sites and further investigation will be conducted.

British-based IHG and US-owned Booking.com protest this accusations and they will show proof that they are not doing anything illegal. Thus problem arise when a small online travel agent was stopped in providing promos for hotel rooms.

OFT said ”

Booking.com and Expedia had entered into separate agreements with IHG which appeared to breach the 1998 Competition Act. Expedia allegedly violated rules from 2007 to 2010, the OFT said, adding that the arrangement between Booking.com and IHG was continuing”.

The regulator continued ” The alleged infringements could limit price competition between online travel agents and make it harder for new online travel agents to offer cut-price deals.”

OFT chief executive Clive Maxwell said: “We want people to benefit fully from being able to shop around online and get a better deal from discounters.”

Mark Datta, managing director of a mobile-only hotel booking service, Blink Booking, was not surprised by the findings. He said: “We have long believed that the big online travel agents have been guilty of denying consumers the best prices — and that hotels’ hands are tied by price parity agreements.

“The online travel market may appear to offer plenty of choice and competition, but the reality is that there are lots of different shop windows selling the same rooms at the same prices — with those prices agreed through deals between the big groups and the big online travel agents.”

IHG and Booking.com said they would contest the OFT’s “provisional findings”. IHG said its arrangements with online booking agents were “compliant with competition laws”.

Expedia said: “Expedia remains committed to ensuring it provides consumers with the widest possible choice of travel options at competitive prices.”
